Winner: Best Actor (Comedy) = Brad Bell (aka Cheeks) in “Husbands” - winning his 2nd award of the night at the Indie Soap Awards 2013 - in NYC. 

The first award was for Best Writing (Comedy) - won by Brad and Jane Espenson for “Husbands”.

I was curious how people that create characters in shows feel about slash. So I talked to Jane Espenson, who’s worked on Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, Once Upon a Time, Husbands, and everything else how she felt about her characters having lives outside the ones she created for them. After all, isn’t someone moving GI Joes into her Barbie Dream House? So is she delighted, offended, or indifferent?

Not offended at all! Delighted!!!! It means as writers we succeeded in creating the illusion that the characters have lives beyond the screen. And because the fanfic writers are using prose, not script format, they can give the characters all kinds of internal lives that are hard for us to explore on screen. If they want to create extra-canon romances… More power to them! Hooray!

AND… The fact that there is such an unfulfilled hunger for romance — tv isn’t meeting the demand— that’s part of what tells me there is a far bigger audience for a romantic comedy like Husbands.
